1920s-1940s Chinatown, New York in Second Life

One of my favorite areas to roam in Second Life (SL) is the 1920s-1940s New York area in the Time Portal. After the demise of 1920s New York by Jogi, from which I’m still not fully recovered ha, I went searching for a comparable sim. While Time Portal’s New York is smaller, it has that same charm and style that envelops my senses with all things vintage. It really does feel a bit like I’ve traveled back in time.

Every Sunday evening at 3pm SLT I enjoy spending time with fellow time travelers at Mama Bao’s, The Gem of Chinatown, for music and dancing. Each week there is a new theme showcasing a particular artist, group, or time period. There is a great mix of people here who share a love of vintage music! You can dance, but no pressure as you can also choose to sit at the bar and enjoy the tunes sipping a cocktail.

Feeling nibblish? Hang at the chop suey restaurant or noodle bar! There are some great dishes to eat, and hot tea to sip and relax. Both restaurants are located in the main Chinatown square, near Mama Bao’s nightclub.

Feeling devilish? There may, or may not, be an opium den to soothe all that ails you. Plenty of couches to relax with your friends while you dip into the opium available on the various trays. Beautiful Chinese artwork, tapestries, and furnishings throughout. Even if opium isn’t your poison, it’s worth a visit for the decor!

This Chinatown area has become a frequent hangout of mine… so much so that I’ve decided to rent an apartment here and make it one of my beloved SL homes. I love lounging in my living room by the fireplace, listening to music from the 1920s and 1930s from the gorgeous phonograph. The lights and fire escapes outside make for a wonderful city view.
